Yogini Dasha is a sub-system of Vedic timing (Dasha) that runs on a 36-year repeating cycle governed by eight feminine planetary energies called Yoginis. Unlike the 120-year Vimshottari Dasha which uses the Moon's nakshatra, Yogini Dasha is determined by the nakshatra index of the Moon at birth and maps directly to the ruling Yogini whose energy colors events during that sub-period.
The cycle begins with Sankata (8 years, Rahu) and runs through Mangala (1 year, Moon), Pingala (2 years, Sun), Dhanya (3 years, Jupiter), Bhramari (4 years, Mars), Bhadrika (5 years, Mercury), Ulka (6 years, Saturn), and Siddha (7 years, Venus) - totaling 36 years, after which it repeats from Sankata. The auspiciousness of each Yogini period depends on the natal chart's relationship to its ruling planet.
The eight Yoginis
Sankata - Rahu (8 years)
A period of obstacles, confusion, and sudden changes. Favorable outcomes require a well-placed Rahu in the birth chart.
Mangala - Moon (1 year)
Short but deeply auspicious. Emotional nourishment, domestic harmony, and support from women and family.
Pingala - Sun (2 years)
Mixed: authority and recognition are possible, but conflicts with fathers and government figures may arise.
Dhanya - Jupiter (3 years)
Auspicious for wisdom, education, spiritual growth, and fortune. Often brings expansion and prosperity.
Bhramari - Mars (4 years)
Mixed: courage and initiative are strong, but conflicts, accidents, or legal disputes are possible.
Bhadrika - Mercury (5 years)
Favorable for business, communication, learning, and trade. Intellect and adaptability come to the fore.
Ulka - Saturn (6 years)
Mixed: discipline and perseverance yield results, but delays and separation are common themes.
Siddha - Venus (7 years)
Highly auspicious. Pleasures, romance, artistic success, wealth, and material comforts flourish.
Common questions
The Moon's nakshatra index at birth (0--26) is mapped to the 8-Yogini cycle using the formula: (nakshatra index + 3) mod 8. This gives the starting Yogini and the remaining years in that Yogini at birth, based on the Moon's degree within the nakshatra.
Vimshottari runs a 120-year cycle through 9 planets. Yogini Dasha runs a 36-year cycle through 8 feminine energies. Many Jyotishis use both systems simultaneously - Yogini Dasha is considered especially sensitive for timing events in the current birth.
The ruling planet of the active Yogini is the key. If that planet is well-placed (own sign, exalted, kendra, well-aspected) in your natal chart, the Yogini period tends to be favorable. A weak, debilitated, or heavily afflicted ruler indicates difficulty.
Yes - Yogini Dasha is cross-referenced with Vimshottari sub-periods (antardashas) and transits for event prediction. Venus-ruled Siddha is often associated with marriage and artistic success; Saturn-ruled Ulka with career hardship or change; Jupiter-ruled Dhanya with education and luck.
Yes. The Yogini Dasha cycle repeats every 36 years. A person experiencing Siddha Dasha at age 20 will experience it again at age 56, and so on. The birth chart's condition and transits differentiate how each recurrence manifests.
