A "dosha" (Sanskrit: दोष, literally "fault" or "imbalance") in Vedic astrology is a specific planetary configuration that creates a heightened sensitivity or challenge in a particular life domain. Unlike yogas, which show promise and strength, doshas indicate areas requiring attention, remediation, or conscious effort.
Sivayan's dosha engine evaluates 17 classical doshas in a single pass. Each dosha is scored for severity and annotated with remedy hints drawn from classical Parashari and Jaimini traditions. Crucially, the report also confirms which doshas are NOT present - because knowing what is absent is equally important for a balanced reading.
Doshas evaluated
Mangal / Kuja Dosha
Mars in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house. Affects relationship harmony; severity varies by sign, house placement and classical cancellation conditions.
Kaal Sarpa Dosha
All planets hemmed between Rahu and Ketu. Creates intense life themes of ambition, obstacles and eventual mastery.
Guru Chandal Dosha
Jupiter conjunct or aspected by Rahu or Ketu. Distorts wisdom, ethics and religious inclinations.
Gandamool Dosha
Moon in one of the six Gandamool nakshatras (Ashwini, Ashlesha, Magha, Jyeshtha, Mula, Revati). Requires specific remediation.
Grahan Dosha
Sun or Moon within orb of Rahu or Ketu - the eclipse yoga. Affects the karaka domain of the affected luminary.
Pitru Dosha
Indicators of ancestral karma requiring remediation - typically Sun or Moon with Rahu/Ketu in specific houses.
Shrapit Dosha
Saturn conjunct Rahu - indicates karmic debt carried into this lifetime.
Angarak Dosha
Mars conjunct Rahu - intense, volatile, accident-prone combination.
Vish Yoga
Moon and Saturn in the same sign - emotional heaviness, delays and slow-burning challenges.
Common questions
No. A dosha is a structural sensitivity - a part of the chart where the native will be tested more than average. Classical texts prescribe remedies precisely because these challenges can be mitigated. Having a dosha does not predetermine a negative outcome; it signals where focused attention and appropriate remediation will be most beneficial.
Mangal Dosha severity depends on Mars's house position (8th is strongest, 12th is milder), its sign dignity (own/exaltation reduces severity), and whether classical cancellation conditions apply (e.g., Mars in the lagna of Aries or Scorpio, or the partner also has Mars in an equivalent position).
Yes, in certain combinations. The most common example is Mangal Dosha - classical texts list more than 20 cancellation conditions. Kaal Sarpa Dosha can be partially mitigated by strong planets outside the Rahu-Ketu axis. Gandamool Dosha is mitigated by specific Nakshatra transition timing and Saturn dignity.
Guru Chandal Dosha specifically refers to Jupiter in close conjunction (typically within 10°) with Rahu or Ketu, or Rahu/Ketu aspecting Jupiter in certain house configurations. The dosha corrupts the natural Jupiterian qualities - guru-student relationships, dharma, ethics, knowledge - rather than just affecting the house Jupiter occupies.
Not necessarily. The severity score guides priority. High-severity doshas active during a relevant Mahadasha or Antardasha are the ones to address first. Mild or trace doshas in strong charts may never fully manifest. Always consult a qualified Jyotishi for personalized remedy prescription.
