The Atmakaraka (AK), literally "soul significator", is the single most important planet in Jaimini astrology. It is the planet sitting at the highest degree within its sign, regardless of which sign — and it represents the central theme your soul is working on this life.
How the Atmakaraka is found
Take the degree each planet holds within its sign (0° to 30°) and find the highest. In the widely used eight-karaka (Jaimini/JHora-default) scheme, Rahu is included but counted in reverse (30° minus its degree). The winner is your Atmakaraka.
What the AK tells you
- The core lesson or desire your chart is built around.
- The planet whose dasha and placement carry unusual weight for your growth.
- Read together with the Karakamsa (the AK’s Navamsa sign) for deeper spiritual direction.
The chara karaka scheme
The Atmakaraka is the first of the chara (movable) karakas. Below it come the Amatyakaraka (career/advisor), Bhratrikaraka, Matrikaraka, and others — a hierarchy of significators unique to Jaimini that complements the Parashari house system.
Find your soul planet
Sivayan computes the chara karakas using the eight-karaka scheme with Rahu reverse-counted — the JHora-default standard — so your Atmakaraka and its Karakamsa match professional Jaimini practice.
